Exclamation! London Planetree (Platanus x acerifolia ‘Morton Circle’)
Pyramidal form, interesting bark, and tolerance of alkaline soils are just a few of the things we like about this large canopy tree.
- Hardiness Range: Zones 4 to 8
- Height: 50-60′
- Spread: 40-50′
- Exposure: Full Sun
- Bloom Color: Inconspicuous
Why We Love It:
Broad leaves, fast growth rate, interesting “camouflage” colored bark, and consistent stately form make this a good option for large spaces where a big shade tree is desired. Exclamation! Planetree is tolerant of a variety of soil and environmental conditions, and can be grown successfully in urban or suburban locations that would be very stressful for other Midwestern tree species. Young planetrees have smoother brown bark, but as the tree matures, a very attractive mottled pattern forms.
The Exclamation! cultivar has good resistance to anthracnose and frost cracking. Of particular advantage to those of us in Waukesha County: this tree also tolerates alkaline soils, clay soils, and some road/driveway deicing salt.
Know Before You Plant:
This tree does drop fruit. The dry seeds are approximately 1″ in diameter and are born in pairs on thin stalks. While Exclamation! tends to fruit less heavily than the straight species, we recommend thoughtful placement in large lawn spaces, rather than directly overhanging walkways or areas where vehicles are parked. The fruit is attractive to wildlife, a nice benefit.
Where It Thrives:
Large open spaces with plenty of room to mature.
