Russian Cypress (Microbiota Decussata)
A Graceful Hardy Groundcover
- Hardiness Range: Zones 3-7
- Height: 18 inches
- Spread: 8 feet
- Exposure: Full to No Sun
Why We Love it:
Closely resembling a spreading juniper in shape but with the foliage of arborvitae, the Russian Cypress is a graceful groundcover evergreen many may over look when looking to design their landscape. This little known but hardy shrub has lush spearmint green foliage that stand out in every season. Here in Waukesha, the Russian Cypress being deer tolerant makes it an even easier choice!
Know Before You Plant:
Foliage is bright green in summer changing to bronze-purple in fall and winter. Most common uses are for ground cover or in mass plantings. It is best pruned in late winter once the threat of extreme cold has passed making it a relatively low maintenance plant. This cypress produces ornamental fruits that are tiny, spherical, berry-like cones with woody scales.
Where it Thrives:
This shrub performs well in both full sun and full shade. It is very adaptable to both dry and moist growing conditions, but will not tolerate any standing water. Consider applying a thick mulch around the root zone in winter to protect it in exposed locations from our coldest climates.
