Sun King Aralia (Aralia cordata Sun King)

Bring a burst of bright gold to shady spaces!

  • Hardiness Range: Zones 3a to 8
  • Height: 4′
  • Spread: 4′
  • Exposure: Sun to Full Shade
  • Bloom Color: White

Why We Love It:
This big, rugged perennial holds up well in Waukesha County and brings excellent color contrast to woodland gardens. Almost all shade perennials are primarily green when not in bloom, making Sun King an excellent addition. White flowers are at their showiest in late summer.

This variety of Aralia tolerates a range of soil and pH conditions, as well as urban/suburban conditions.

Know Before You Plant:
Aralia is an herbaceous perennial, and will die back to the crown at the end of the growing season (late fall/winter in Wisconsin). Once established, aralia has reasonable drought tolerance, but when newly planted, it is important to monitor for water. Young root systems should not be subjected to extremely dry conditions. Aralia can be prone to suckering over time, and it can be thinned or split.

Where It Thrives:
Woodland gardens, mixed perennial beds, or used in masses.
